Sugar alternatives aka nonnutritive sweeteners are everywhere! These sweeteners are derived from various sources including herbs, plants, and sugar itself. Typically, these sugar alternatives have little or no calories and do not contain sugar.

You are what you eat? Or maybe, you are what you sleep?? 💤
Are you struggling getting a restful night of sleep? Did you know your diet can affect your sleep? Diets low in fiber and high in saturated fats are linked to poor quality sleep. In addition, poor sleep is linked to increased risk of chronic diseases and weight gain.
Characteristics of poor sleep quality diets:
- High consumption of poor-quality carbohydrates (refined/highly processed foods).
- Drinking sugar-sweetened beverages or energy drinks over 1x per month.
- Consuming spicy foods or high protein foods within 3-hours of going to bed.
- What about alcohol? While alcohol is a sedative and can help you fall asleep faster. Alcohol does wear off and is linked to sleep disruption and worsening of sleep apnea.
Melatonin:
Melatonin is a unique hormone in that it can aid in restful sleep. While melatonin supplements are available over the counter (OTC), several foods are naturally rich in melatonin aiding in sleep. Further melatonin reduces risk of neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease) and supports eye health.

I order this dish on repeat at my favorite Israeli brunch spot in NYC! Classic shakshuka served on top of hummus served alongside pita. Since I made this at home, I used only egg whites but can easily sub for the whole egg. Bursting Blueberry Oat Muffins
I am not a fan of overnight oats; however baked oats are my jam. Bursting blueberries in each wholesome oat bit with a drizzle of honey on top. These taste amazing right out of the oven when still warm, would taste amazing with a drizzle of nut butter also!
Blueberries are 1 of the healthiest fruits thanks to their nutrient profile:
🫐 Rich in antioxidants which have been shown to reduce DNA damage and protect against cancer
🫐 Good sources of vitamin C (immune health) vitamin K (blood clotting) manganese (bone health)
🫐 Filled with soluble fiber- helps the gut eliminate waste
🫐 While blueberries are highly nutritious, they also are victim of high pesticides, buying organic blueberries is the safest option. Check out the frozen blueberries which I buy are cheaper and highly nutritious!

Roasted Chickpea Apple Salad
My favorite plant-based protein source for salads is roasted chickpeas 😋 Super easy to make! Chickpeas are excellent protein & fiber sources, filled with copper, folate, manganese & iron!
Basic roasted chickpea recipe:
* 1 can chickpeas, drained + rinsed
* 1 teaspoon avocado oil
* Spices
1.) preheat oven to 425F, line a baking tray with parchment paper.
2.) in a small bowl add the prepared chickpeas. Using a fork, mash about half of the chickpeas. This adds a nice texture element to salads! Drizzle the avocado oil plus any spices you like! My favorite spice combo is garlic powder, chili powder, smoked paprika, pepper, turmeric and pinch of salt.
3.) mix well, pour chickpeas on baking pan, spread out evenly on pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes based on desired crispy level 🤩

BBQ Salmon marinade w/ potatoes
This is by far the easiest tastiest way to prep salmon. Start cooking the potatoes while the salmon marinades for a one sheet meal. Easy clean-up & nutritious meal.
Ingredients
For the salmon:
1lb salmon, rinsed + pat dry
1/3 cup BBQ sauce
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 teaspoon dried herbs
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
For the potatoes:
3 small yellow potatoes, diced in 1-inch pieces
1 tablespoon plant sterol melted
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt & pepper to taste
Recipe:
1. Preheat oven to 450F. Spray an 9x13 pan with cooking spray. Melt the plant sterol, I do this in the pan while oven eats up.
2. Place diced potatoes in pan. Sprinkle spices on top and mix well with melted plant sterol.
3. Bake for 20-minutes in oven.
4. White potatoes cooking marinade the salmon. In a small bowl mix together the BBQ sauce with spices. Sprinkle salt + pepper on salmon. Brush on the marinade, top with minced garlic and let marinate for 20-minutes.
5. Lower oven to 350F. Clear space in middle of pan and place salmon in middle, surrounded by potatoes.
6. Bake for 15 minutes till salmon flakey. Enjoy!
Sriracha Salmon + Cucumber Salad
This was the ultimate nourishing meal I can’t wait to make again! I wanted to touch on keeping your heath a priority when you have a busy schedule.
Between dietetic internship, work + 9 weeks till I graduate with my masters degree 🎓 managing everything is a bit hectic ATM
While it definitely would be easier to prioritize other things over health, make a conscious effort to maintain healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips I use to prioritize my health & balance a busy schedule
* Prep breakfast overnight, I am a huge chia seed pudding fan, I have it everyday for breakfast getting over half of my daily fiber needs done right in the morning ✔️
* Add a veggie in with lunch & dinner, I always reach for a balance of veggie, whole grain, protein and fat source
* Don’t go long periods of not eating. I eat every 3 hours, keep that metabolism fueled
* Take time to cook a healthy dinner each night. Now I am not saying spend an hour in the kitchen every night but devote time to whip up a quick and healthy dinner. Sit down and enjoy your meal.
* Meditate! For my current rotation my commute is a bit far so on the bus I like to do a quick 10-minute meditation 🧘♀️
* Workout at least 3x a week, going for walk outside is perfect!

Garlicky Lemon Baked Tilapia
Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a big fish fan. However, this recipe has changed me! Tilapia doesn’t have that strong fish smell and absorbs the marinade flavor very well. Tilapia is rich in selenium, potassium, niacin, B12, and phosphorus. Besides not having a strong fish smell, tilapia is inexpensive compared to other fish and full of minerals and vitamins.
🐠 A concern about tilapia is farming practices used in sourcing. Look for certified tilapia and that it is sourced from the US, Canada, Peru, and the Netherlands.

Light & fluffy blueberry bread is what dreams are made of. Last week while shopping there was a 2-for-1 deal at the farmers market. While I was thinking what do to with an extra pint of bloobs before they spoil, blueberry bread popped in my mind. Blueberries are jammed packed with antioxidants, vitamins K/C and manganese.
